Brain Size Can Predict Game Performance
Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Gaming, Medicine
If you wonder why you suck so badly at Modern Warfare 2, it could be biological. According to a study published in the journal Cerebral Cortex, the size of your brain can predict how well you perform in video games,
(Presumably mad) scientists at the University of Illinois say specific parts of the striatum, a collection of tissues deep inside the cerebral cortex, influence a person’s ability to “refine his or her motor skills, learn new procedures, develop useful strategies and adapt to a quickly changing environments.” In short: All the skills you need to do well in a game.
“This is the first time that we’ve been able to take a real world task like a video game and show that the size of specific brain regions is predictive of performance and learning rates on this video game,” said Kirk Erickson, a professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh and first author on the study.
Sadly, it doesn’t work in reverse, so you can’t play a bunch of video games and grow those structures in your brain — you’re stuck with the equipment you were born with.
Study shows that better gamers have bigger brains, are better learners too [Engadget]

Modern Warfare 2 Worldwide Sales Pass $1 Billion
Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Gaming

According to Activision’s internal estimates, worldwide sales for Infinity Ward’s wildly popular shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have now passed $1 billion.
“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and video game records,” said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick in a statement released to the press. “There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game.”
The announcement isn’t all that surprising considering the game has been smashing sales records since it took in an estimated $550 million worldwide just five days after its release back in November, but it’s still mighty impressive.

Assassin’s Creed Fan Film Is Great!
Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Gaming
Over the past several years, the Assassin’s Creed franchise has gathered quite the following. TheDuoGroup has stepped up to deliver an amazing fan film titled “Initiation” that follows Altair (from AC 1) as he performs the final step before becoming a true assassin.
Here’s a description:
“Initiation” takes place before Altair has received the coveted title of “Hashshashin.” Like all young men, Altair aspired to leave his mark on the world. After years of grueling training, fear and anticipation course through his veins. Anticipation, because he understands that this is the last right of passage towards brotherhood. Fear, because he knows that though hundreds of apprentices have reached this point, few come back alive.
Keep in mind that it’s not an official Ubisoft video, so the story is not canon, but check out the video for yourself if you’re a fan of the franchise.

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands to continue ‘Sands of Time’ series
Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Gaming

Ubisoft has just announced a new Prince of Persia — but it’s not a sequel to 2008’s polarizing adventure (if desired, add unhappy emoticons to sentence). Instead, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands will continue the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time trilogy series, complete with “many of the fan-favorite elements” and “new gameplay innovations that gamers have come to expect from the Prince of Persia brand.” Oh, and an accompanying film!
You can catch the game’s premiere trailer on Spike TV’s Video Game Awards on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 8 p.m. EST. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is scheduled for release on “consoles and handhelds” in May 2010.

Prince of Persia Movie Poster Revealed
Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Gaming, Movies & TV
This poster makes me even more excited for this movie! Notice the similarities between his outfit here and the one in Warrior Within. Makes me have a little more faith that they aren’t bastardizing this franchise and actually care about making it a good movie. Click the images for a bigger view.
