Intel and AMD to power PS4, Xbox 720, and WiiII?

Rumors are spreading across the internet that Nvidia may get left out in the cold for the new generation of gaming consoles. Intel and AMD are set to split the spoils between them it looks like, leaving Nvidia (in all its glory and its ego) to play with the PC market, which, as we are constantly being reminded, is dying a slow and painful death.

It seems that there’s some bad blood between Sony and Nvidia, leading some insiders to say that the GPU contract has gone over to Intel.  Yes, GPU which means Intel may be getting its hands dirty by entering the GPU card department to take on AMD and Nvidia head on. Kind of puts the lid back on Nvidia’s can of whoop-ass. Similarly, Microsoft may be switching to AMD GPUs for grudge-related reasons. The Wii2, or WII, or Wiii, or Twii, will likely be sporting AMD hardware since ATI has been Nintendo’s partner for quite a while now.

Add into this the fact that AMD is probably making rock-bottom bids right about now due to the fact that if they don’t make some money they’re going to be counting their stock’s value in pennies — on their hands. I’d certainly like to see a comeback like this.

2008 Console Sales Analysis: Microsoft Down, Nintendo Up, Sony Mixed

Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Gaming, ZOMG

Gamasutra has done a fine analysis of The NPD’s 2008 console sales data. After busting out some sweet pie charts and breaking the information down, Gamasutra has concluded:

“The key observation here is that Microsoft’s market share, both in dollars and in percentage, contracted marginally. While Sony’s dollar share increased slightly, the total increase in the size of the industry actually resulted in a decrease in its percentage of the market.

All of that lost share, of course, has shifted to Nintendo’s column, and the company now appears headed for a nearly 50 percent share of the market in terms of its own hardware and game sales, plus third parties selling merchandise for it.”

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out in 2009. Will Nintendo take a dip since so many people already have DS and Wii systems? Or will the company continue to run wild with those two consoles and the DSi? Will Sony start to close the gap in a significant way this year because of all the exclusive, awesome content? Or will Microsoft take a bigger lead because of its already established base of great games now at a discount?

Sony Announces Billion Dollar Loss, First Time In 14 Years

Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Gaming, Tech, ZOMG

The global financial crisis really starts to hit home when you see some of the biggest companies in the world declaring a loss.

Technology powerhouse Sony is the latest to reveal some rather shaky figures for 2008-2009, during which it not only missed its $2.2billion forecast but actually ended up 260 billion yen ($2.9 billion) in the red.

To emphasise just how dire a result this is, it’s the first time the company has declared a loss in 14 years and only the second since 1958. The final figure is likely to be even higher; perhaps double what is being quoted so far.
