Kaz Hirai on How to Succeed as a Console

You can usually count on a PlayStation 3 to be a slick, dependable piece of hardware. This is something Sony likes to remind us time and time again. Now that they have a great lineup of games thing might start working out for Sony afterall. Don’t count them out just yet. Why do you ask? Read the quote below by Sony exec Kaz Hirai:
“A console always needs a solid core of games that appeal to gamers…If you go mainstream too quickly and don’t support the core gaming audience then you lack the pillar to support your platform. Without this pillar you end up with a fickle audience that might be big but will probably move on.”
I agree 100% with the man. It’s been my biggest concern for Nintendo from the getgo. Even now in Japan we have seen slowing sales for Wiis. Perhaps Nintendo’s lack of games I have been preaching for some time now may come back to bight them in the asses. Good thing they announced some strong core games for next year because otherwise they might have been in trouble.
People often make fun of Sony for going on and on about a “ten year lifespan” for the PS3, but the tale of the tortoise and the hare has been told and re-told for a reason. Could Sony be the tortoise? I think it just might be.

Sony: Wii Owners Will Become PS3 Owners Eventually

Andrew House, the new boss of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, has a new opinion on how the console war is going to pan out. In his first real public interview since assuming the role, House tells Edge Online:
If you look back at previous lifecycles, like PS2 versus N64 [sic], we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the lifecycle when the price point was right for them.
I think we’re going to see this later on PS3, and the fact that it’s a Blu-ray player as well and that there’s a [greater] wealth of network based experiences than are perhaps available on the device they already have will add to the proposition. I think that will definitely be a factor in the marketplace.
Interesting take and definitely not a bad start to the man’s shit-talking career!

Penny Arcade sums up Nintendo’s E3 Press Conference

Many emotions were felt during Nintendo’s E3 Press Conference. Much of the first half was boredom. It wasn’t until Iwata introduced the Wii Vitality Sensor that emotions really started to fly… The guys at Penny Arcade could not have summed up the press conference any better that this:

Some good looking games at the end, but ultimately not as great as Microsoft. I’m glad to see that Nintendo’s finally releasing some hardcore titles.I have to say though Super Mario Galaxy 2 looks a little too much like the last one for my comfort, but I’m sure it’ll be good.

E3 Live Tweeting This Week [Microsoft today at 10:30 PST]
