Hulu Launches Desktop App For PC And Mac

Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Tech

If you haven’t heard of Hulu, you’ve been living under a rock because even my nontech-savvy parents know what it is. In just two years, the website has significantly altered the TV/Internet landscape, and now the company is taking it one step further.Hulu has just released a desktop application that lets users access all of Hulu’s content without using a web browser. The app also works with both Windows Media Player and Apple remotes. To me, this is the soon-to-be future of television. The strange thing is that this is essentially the same idea behind what Boxee on the Apple TV, which has been thwarted by Hulu with every update to the service leading users to desperately try workarounds to continue to use Boxee. Maybe Hulu just wants to have total control over their content. But even with Boxee, you still saw the ads (Hulu’s source of income) so I don’t know why they would care. In any event, yay for Hulu Desktop. The release video is below.

Hulu Launching iPhone Application? [Pretty please?]

Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Movies & TV, Tech

iPhone

NBC’s Hulu may be launching an iPhone application, so you’ll be able to check out the service’s thousands of hours of programming on the go. How sweet it that!? According to unnamed sources, Hulu on iPhone will launch within a few months.

Both Hulu and Apple haven’t said anything, although this isn’t the first time the idea has been brought up. NBC Universal’s chief digital officer George Kliavkoff has said, “There wasn’t a lot of premium video being released [online] in a consumer-friendly way, so we decided to launch a joint venture and go down that path. I don’t know why we couldn’t do something similar for mobile.”

One issue that may be causing the delay is that fact that Apple’s iTunes could be seen as Hulu’s major competitor in bringing video content to people on their phones.

Apple has allowed video streaming apps from CBS’s TV.com and Joost, but has turned down the Slingplayer application (which is probably the most similar to Hulu) and Podcaster, so you have to figure Steve Jobs and company are carefully weighing the pros and cons of adding a huge program like Hulu to their platform.

UPDATE: George Kliavkoff was asked to resign a couple months ago so no way of knowing if the plans to continue a hulu app are a go still. Thanks Sol superior.
