Nexus One Touch Screen Glitch [Droid Does]
Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Tech
The Droid is on point and the Nexus One has a pretty significant axis-flipping problem. What gives? While you might THINK this could be a problem solved with an OTA update it isn’t looking like a likely outcome based on a Google Employee response by Diane Hackborn:
“Sorry I meant exactly what I said: this is how the touch screen hardware on the Nexus One works (which is essentially the same screen as on the G1 and myTouch). The Droid has a sensor from a different manufacturer, with different behavior. Other phones will likewise have different sensors.”

Comparing the Big 4: Google vs. Microsoft vs. Apple vs. Yahoo!
Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Tech

It’s no secret that Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Yahoo are always expanding their reaches, slowly but surely adding new products and services into their line-ups. The New York Times’s Nick Bilton took a step back and surveyed their empires.
It doesn’t come as much of a surprise to see how much these four behemoths overlap, and I doubt anyone will be surprised when these companies continue to fill in this grid in 2010.
Looking at the empty spaces reveals where we might look for these companies to grow. There have been grumblings of a Google music store for a while, and it seems entirely possible that Apple’s Tablet will at least in part emphasize its capabilities as a gaming device.
As the companies stretch and grow, some of their endeavors will prove more successful than others, but until then this chart is an interesting reminder of how vast their reaches already are.

Nexus One Gets Reviewed [Engadget]
Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Tech
There’s a solid full review of the Nexus One over at Engadget for your reading pleasure. Surprisingly, unlike other pre-release reviews of the Nexus One, the Engadget guys aren’t completely blown away by the device and are actually a little unsure if it’s significantly better than the Droid. Here are the highlights:
- the Nexus One is nothing if not handsome. From its ultra-thin body to sleek, curved edges, the phone is absolutely lustworthy.
- We actually had some real trouble with those four dedicated buttons.
- The phone is fast, assuredly, but not so much of a leap up from the Droid that we felt it kept pace with the boost we were expecting.
- We found colors on the Nexus One, particularly in the reds and oranges, to be severely blown-out and oversaturated
- The AMOLED screen is difficult to see in sunlight (as is the case with many screens of this kind)
- Not only has Google bumped up the speed of the camera app, but the 5 megapixel lens and flash took sharp, detailed images with none of the HTC-related issues we’ve seen on other models.
- Well the real story is that Android 2.1 is in no way dramatically different than the iteration of the OS which is currently running on the Motorola Droid (2.0.1). Of the notable changes, many are cosmetic
The whole review is worth the read, at least to hold you over until the official announcement later today!

Cool Websites #2: ChromeExperiments.com
Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Cool Websites
When Google Chrome launched last September, it included a powerful JavaScript engine, V8, which was built to make the next generation of web applications perform faster in the browser. In the past few months, Google has reached out to more than a dozen developers and designers to experiment with V8 and to find new and creative uses for JavaScript.
The results of their experimentation have been pretty cool, with each project turning the browser window into an interactive application, a game, or even a piece of art. Whether you’re a casual web surfer or an advanced JavaScript developer, I think you’ll find at least one of these experiments cool.
Watch the video below to get a better idea of all the cool stuff you can do.

Apple announced the iPhone 3.0 operating system earlier this week so Lifehacker.com saw fit to have a showdown of sorts between arguably the two top mobile operating systems (post linked below). It looks like with this update Apple has successfully caught up and perhaps even surpassed many of Android’s features with this new update set to release some time this summer. A lot of the updates include features that users have been a little mad about not having from the start (like copy and paste, MMS messaging, etc.). LAPTOP magazine put together a top 10 list of features on their website (also linked below) and they are listed below. Check out the article for more info on each feature.
1. App Subscriptions
2. Peripheral support.
3. Maps in apps
4. Push notifications
5. Peer-to-peer communications
6. Cut and paste!
7. Landscape in more places
8. MMS
9. Spotlight search
10. Better audio features
