Next Gen Wii Could be Smaller, Cheaper

Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Gaming

A few Wii 2 rumors are floating around: it might have HD and a new controller, and could arrive next year. Now in an interview with Popular Mechanics, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto says it may also be more compact and cost-efficient.

“While we don’t have any concrete plans for what we’ll be doing with hardware in the future, what I can say is that, my guess is that because we found this interface to be so interesting, I think it would be likely that we would try to make that same functionality perhaps more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient.”

And as for things like DVD playback without a hack? A glimmer of hope:

“I think originally video-game systems were viewed as a toy, and they were something you played with…As time goes on, I think we’re going to see how the system of the video-game console and this interactive interface is going to gradually bleed in to other elements of, say, home electronics and daily life.”

Korg Kaossilator Guitar [When Video Games & Music Meet]

Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Gaming, Tech

By routing the four buttons on a Kaossilator to the buttons on a Guitar Hero guitar, James Haskin has created one of the coolest little electronic instruments I’ve seen in a while. The resulting mash-up makes it much easier to play the Kaossilator as an instrument rather than a standalone box on your desk.

Best of all, James posted the instructions for building his device for all and sundry to recreate. Great success!

Is OnLive the future of gaming?

Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Gaming

YES! I stand here before you saying the one console future everyone’s been talking about may be as close as next generation. It may even be here as soon as this winter when OnLive debuts. You should definitely watch the videos below to get the big picture, but in a nutshell OnLive is a streaming video game service that will allow you to play any game on any machine at the highest quality, even console games, given you have a good internet connection. They say 5 megabit is all you need. The service can either be used through a unit you can hook up to your TV (pictured right) or through a browser plugin on your computer. I’m sure when they say console games, that doesn’t include console exclusives because if that was the case, I think we can all say goodbye too the expensive PS3.

I’m a little skeptical since I’m sure there will be the occasional lag here and there from hiccups in internet connection. But still, this is amazing. You can play on your TV with their own little box that looks  to be about the size of a portable hard drive, or you can play it on your computer through your internet connection. I seriously can’t wait to get my hands on this thing. They already have 9 publishers and developers on board: Atari, Codemasters, Eidos, EA, Epic, Take Two, THQ, Ubisoft, Warner Bros. Those are top-end publishers too so this thing really has a huge backing. The publishers/developers have also promised to submit the games to OnLive at the same time they go to retail so no apparent delay either before the games arive on the service.

According to the guy in the video, the SDK only requires a “couple more weeks of work” so it’s really not that bad compared to having to port games over to the PS3. Sorry to knock the PS3, but you all know it’s hard to develop for so don’t shoot the messenger.

Imagine this, you’re playing Crysis (a game that requires you to sell your kidney to buy parts to play at the highest setting) with perfect visuals on your shitty 4 year old laptop that has a low-end graphics card. Don’t like the controller that comes with the box? OnLive works with any controller that is compatible with a PC or Mac. How can you NOT want this?? I can’t wait. Watch the two 5 minute videos below for more info.

Check out the site here: [OnLive]

Here’s another video from G4 that does a quick run through of the service.

Assassin’s Creed Game Coming for the iPhone

Posted by Mavrik | Filed under Gaming

Assassin’s Creed 2 may be well underway, but it’s not the only AC game on the horizon, as it was announced over the weekend that mobile port specialists Gameloft (creators of quality games for the iPhone like Hero of Sparta which you all should download if you haven’t already) will be bringing the series to the iPhone.

Apparently the gameplay will still have the same free-running over city rooftops and across multiple cities we all loved in the original, though I’m sure it’ll be a little smaller scaled. Still it’s great to hear Gameloft is taking this one under their wing to create a real game.

There’s no word on a release date or price as of yet.

Fun fact: Assassin’s Creed is owned by Ubisoft. Ubisoft is run by Yves Guillemot. Gameloft is run by Michel Guillemot, Yve’s brother. No wonder Gameloft’s premiere games are quality. I say premiere because they, like Ubisoft, do have those less hard-core games in the mix as well.
