The iPhone has its work cut out for it

Check out this quick demo of the calendar function of the Palm Pre. Sure it’s fairly similar to the iPhone, but I’m a man that really likes the little things. Here, for example, the fact that you can compress the unused areas on your calendar is a simple but great idea. I always find myself hating to see the day view on my iPod touch because I have to scroll to see everything.  Having it all viewable in one screen while also allowing it to be expanded to put in new items is a great idea and definitely makes the calendar function more efficiently. It shows that Palm wasn’t just going for the iPhone clone.  They were thinking, “How can we go one better.” Nice move. The rest is also well integrated. This phone looks like it could be a true competitor to the iPhone. It still looks like it’s not as smooth as the iPhone, but granted it hasn’t been released yet so keep that in mind. I’m not going to go as far as to say the Palm Pre will be the iPhone killer, but maybe T-mobile’s G1 killer?

UPDATE: Another thing that is important to note is a lot of companies are improving upon their original, not-so-great interfaces and coming out with some very promising operating systems. Android, Palm Pre, and even Windows Mobile 6.5 show real improvement. This makes me wonder how the Apple will respond. There is no doubt in my mind that the iPhone will continue to reign supreme for many years to come, but with all these phones getting better and better functionality, Apple really has to make sure they improve on their design to stay ahead similar to the way they succeeded with the iPod by staying ahead of the pack. I don’t see them doing it by adding features, just by creating that “feeling” you get by owning one of their products.
